This training is to train teachers for the national family education course:
Family to Family. NAMI Michigan will supply all the materials. Cost per person at the camp is $57 excluding Friday meals. NAMI Michigan is requesting $25 reimbursement for each person. If there is a financial need, please call Kristen Taylor, Interim Executive Director, NAMI Michigan 517.853.0950.
All persons who teach the course must be family members of a person with mental illness. It can be a parent, sibling, spouse, or other close relative. This is a volunteer opportunity. NO ONE should expect to be paid by anyone to teach the course. PER NAMI, no one may charge for the course. One can ask for donations during the course or at the end of the course to help cover the cost of printing materials.
Per national standards, it requires two people to teach a course. Therefore, unless someone in your affiliate is already trained, there should be at least two people attending. It may be a relational couple. It is better to have 3 or 4 trained so if someone is gone or becomes ill, the program can go on. We recommend a resource person for each class but that person does not need to be officially trained.
In order to participate in the training, all persons must have a written plan to teach a course as to place, time and cost of the course. This should be done in connection with an affiliate near you. If you do not have an affiliate or the affiliate is unwilling to sponsor a course, please call Kristen Taylor, Interim Executive Director, NAMI Michigan.
The course is copyrighted. No part of the course may be taken or used in any other way than prescribed. It is crucial all teachers be willing to follow the course as laid out of 12 weeks 2 1/2 hour sessions. The course is being evaluated as a best practice and in order to obtain the outcome of healing it is mandatory one follow the course as written.
The course is completely laid out and scripted. There is ample time for discussion. No computers or equipment is needed. There are handouts, homework, and charts that need to be printed. All of these are in a .pdf file that can be taken to any printer. One can seek support from the affiliate, church, community donors, or other in-kind sources to help support the cost of the course.
The camp is camp style-dorms with a community bathroom and a center meeting place. The facilities are heated. We will begin on Friday at 1:00 p.m. Please eat your lunch before you arrive. We ask everyone to bring a sack meal for dinner that evening and a snack to be shared later in the evening.
According to the schedule from NAMI, we are to begin at 9:30 a.m. However, we feel that will make it difficult to get there. So in the afternoon we will need to be dedicated and work into the early evening hours.
If there are any questions about the application or taking the course, please contact either Kristen or send an email to: FamilytoFamilyMI@gmail.com
