Capitol Update

The NAMI Michigan Public Policy Committee finds great strides in the position of Partners for Parity with this package legislation proposal. We support the concept of a comprehensive approach for providing parity in all brain disorders including but not limited to mental illness, developmental disorders, autism spectrum disorders and substance abuse.
NAMI Michigan supports HB 4476, the “Autism Insurance Act.” NAMI Michigan recognizes that Autism Spectrum Disorders are biologically based brain disorders and like other illnesses of this kind, benefit from appropriate treatments and interventions.
The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Michigan calls upon legislators to demonstrate their leadership by supporting mental health courts and rejecting cuts to their funding. The nine pilot mental health courts currently established or being established in the State of Michigan are powerful and innovative tools for treating mentally ill individuals and diverting them from incarceration.
