The NAMI Michigan Annual Conference will be held at the Amway Grand Plaza in Grand Rapids, Michigan on April 24 & 25, 2010. Steve Lopez — author of,  The Soloist — is the lunch speaker on Saturday.

Lopez has been a columnist for the Los Angeles Times since 2001. He has also written for Time, Life, Entertainment Weekly and Sports Illustrated. Lopez wrote a series of columns about his relationship with a cello player diagnosed with schizophrenia named Nathanial Ayers. This series inspired the film The Soloist, which stars Robert Downey Jr. as Lopez.

There will be informational sessions covering the Recovery from Mental Illness or for persons in Recovery, Family education and support, affiliate advancement and the development of a Crisis Intervention approach. The conference will include CE’s for Social Workers.
